Public
relations is more than “publicity.” It’s a four-part
process:
• Identifying a company’s or organization’s problem
or opportunity.
• Developing a comprehensive public relations program that manages
the problem or capitalizes on the opportunity.
• Implementing the program through action and communication.
• Evaluating the completed program’s results and effectiveness.
While
the process may sound complex, it doesn’t have to be. Without
a strategic plan, though, any public relations effort is bound to fail.
Sending occasional press releases to the general media might feel like
a program, but it’s more akin to putting up random two-by-fours
and hoping a house will eventually take shape.
